Like a lot of things, coffee is more than just the sum of its parts. Aside from taste, the way it is packaged and put into your hands (and thus french press or home espresso machine) matters. At Village People Coffee we are concerned about the amount of waste that takes place in our industry. Between coffee bags, cups, lids and industrial waste there tends to be a lot of junk that ends up in a landfill.
To account for this we have decided to steal what we believe was a great idea by the Craft Beer industry and imitate what they do with Growlers and apply it to the coffee industry. Thus born is the Village People Signature Bucket program... our first step in a series of initiatives we see necessary to take to reduce our waste closer to zero.
Our idea of using buckets to deliver coffee beans to customers might seem like a simple one, but it’s already been a definite game changer. Each bucket is filled with 5 LB of beans and it means we don’t have to use sealed plastic bags that just get thrown out. Customers hold onto the buckets which keep the beans fresh, and we swap the buckets out each time they pick up fresh beans. The buckets get cleaned, sterilized and reused, and at our current rate of business save over a 1000 bags per year from the landfill.
On top of the environmental impact the use of our buckets also allows us to save on packaging costs... savings we are passing onto our customers (Our current price for a 5LB bucket is $90 which is far more affordable than purchasing smaller bags both from us and the industry).
At present, we are only offering our Village People Signature Buckets to customers who are able to pickup at either The Outdoor Store in Baddeck or The Whale House (14 Wentworth) in Sydney. After we test it as a pick up item we will be looking to roll it out for delivery as well with a small price increase to account for shipping costs.
